Thank you so much for this. I was recently diagnosed with depression my doctor believes dysthymia. I'm only 15 so I decided to look up my symptoms and see what was going on with me and look up other kinds of depression and I feel I should talk to my doctor about cycloyhymia.I'm in a group for depressed teen and one week I came in, in a fantastic mood and the councilor insisted that I must have been doing something (pleasant activities as they say) to make my mood better but I knew I didn't and that wasn't the first time that, that happened.

I don't like diagnosing myself and lord knows I don't need other problems but this post made me step back and rethink my mood and behaviors over the last few years and it would explain a lot to me.

so thank you for opening my eyes. I'm a tad less frustrated than I was before thanks to you.

Cyclothymia is not commonly known. Perhaps one reason is because symptoms are often not so severe that one will seek treatment.

Cyclothymics, like those diagnosed bipolar, alternate between depressive and manic phases. Actually, with cyclothymia true mania is not reached. The proper term to describe this phase is hypomanic.

During the depressive phase, cyclothymics experience low confidence, fatigue, negative thoughts and loss of interest in formerly enjoyable activities. During the hypomanic phase confidence returns in excess, though mood may be irritable, sleep difficulties may be present and there are reduced inhibitions.

It is possible that cyclothymia will progress into full bipolar disorder. This illness is usually diagnosed in the teenage or young adult years.

More people need to be educated about all the different types of bipolar. They also need to understand that within each type there are varying levels of severity. I have bipolar 2 with mixed states and rapid cycling but was misdiagnosed and poorly medicated for years. I have just recently started to see this as a manageable disorder as opposed to a crippling disease. Thank you for such a positive site! I rant and rave to myself on my website. Feel free to check it out :)

Thanks for such an informative post. After all these years I still get rapid cycling and mixed episodes confused. Now I understand that what I experience are mixed episodes (I'm BP1).
